New e-car bonus: penalty tax for combustion engines

E-car funding with CO2 tax money

Since December 18, 2023, the purchase of electric cars has no longer been subsidized by the state, and the environmental bonus was quickly canceled. This meant that many electric cars suddenly became several thousand euros more expensive. In return, the Federal Environment Agency would like to ask combustion engine drivers to pay, as a statement by President Dirk Messner in an interview with the Editorial Network Germany (RND) makes clear: “The Federal Environment Agency advocates a bonus-malus system that is based on the polluter pays principle: The higher the CO2 emissions of a car, the greater the tax burden should be. On the other hand, buying an electric car should become more attractive again through a new subsidy: “You could use the income to get a bonus for the purchase of small and medium-sized cars Counter-finance electric cars,” says Messner. The CO2 tax will already rise in 2024 from 30 to 45 euros per ton of carbon dioxide emitted, which will have a direct impact on the accounts of all combustion engine drivers through the price of gasoline and diesel. Staggering CO2 pricing based on vehicle emissions would make driving large, heavy or high-powered combustion engines more expensive.
